Modern cars have control units (ECUs) watching the engine, gearbox, brakes, airbags and electrics all the time. When something goes wrong, they store a fault code, even if no warning light is on yet.
The most common trick in the used car market is clearing codes before the sale. The warning light goes out and the car looks fine, but the problem is still there. An OBD2 scanner shows whether the system was recently reset.
