Used car checks: How to spot rolled-back mileage

"Can you tell if the mileage was rolled back?" Almost 90% of customers ask. The answer: it depends on how much information we have.

Almost 90% of customers ask, "Can you tell if the mileage was rolled back?" I answer confidently that it depends on how much information we have. With enough, we can tell whether the odometer was changed. So what information? Let's look.

Source 1: the service book and dealer history

A car serviced at the dealer has its mileage recorded in the service book at every visit, so we can work out how the car was used. If the car is under 3–5 years old and still under warranty, you can check with the dealer. Most brands now share records online, but whether the dealer will tell you is another matter, as it is personal data.

Source 2: when there is no history

Most cars have no service book, or had their oil changed at independent garages, so there is no record anywhere. This gives some sellers (a minority) a chance to change the mileage, and buyers are left to luck.

There is still a way. It is not as precise as dealer records, but it shows roughly how "often" the car was used, because a well-used car's parts wear, peel, crack and tear with use and time.

Where real use shows

  • Things you touch often: gear knob, steering wheel, door handles, indicator and light stalks, pedals, handbrake. Heavy use makes them shiny without polishing, or makes them peel and crack
  • Seats: peeling or torn leather, or collapsed foam
  • Engine sound: noisy valves or a worn-sounding engine

Today Scan2Car's P4 package includes an in-depth mileage and service history check, which confirms mileage far more clearly than wear alone.

A used car is about value for money

Since Thailand's consumer protection board became more active, sellers are more careful. But any legal claim needs clear evidence, and without it there is little you can do. A used car is not judged on condition alone, but on value for the price. I always hold that "there is no such thing as cheap and good in business".
